Even in the modern world, when s prefer beautiful graphics housings for operating systems, some people need to install DOS. The most convenient way to do this is by using a so-called bootable USB flash drive. This is the most common removable USB drive used to boot the operating system from it. Previously, we took records for these purposes, but now their era has ed and they have been replaced by small holders that easily fit in a pocket.

How to create a bootable DOS USB stick

There are several programs that allow you to record DOS. The easiest is to an ISO image of the operating system and burn it using UltraISO or Universal USB Installer. The burning process is described in detail in the tutorial on how to create a bootable USB flash drive in Windows.

As for image , there is a very convenient old two resource where you can a variety of DOS versions for free.

But there are several programs that are better suited to DOS. Let's talk about them.

Способ 2: HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool 2.8.1

The HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool is currently shipped with a newer version than 2.8.1. But now you don't have the ability to create a bootable media with the DOS operating system. So you need to an older version (you can find a version older than 2.8.1). This can be done, for example, on the resource site f1cd. After ing and running the file for this program, follow these steps:

  1. Under the label "Device", select the inserted USB flash drive to which you will record the ed image.
  2. Specify your file system in "File System" .
  3. Check the box next to the item «Quick format» in the block "Format options" . Do the same with the label "Create a DOS boot disk" . Actually, this very element is responsible for creating a DOS boot drive.
  4. Click the button with three dots to select the ed image.
  5. Click on "Yes" in the warning window that appears after the previous step. It says that all data on the media will be irrevocably lost. But we know.
  6. Wait for the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool to finish writing the operating system to the USB flash drive. Usually this does not take a long time.

Method 3: Rufus

For the Rufus program, our site also has its own instructions for creating a bootable USB flash drive.

But again, regarding MS-DOS, there is an important nuance that applies exclusively to MS-DOS recording. To use Rufus, do the following:

  1. Under the label "Device", select your removable storage media. If the program does not detect it, restart it.
  2. In the countryside "File System", select "FAT32" , because it is the one that best adapts to the DOS operating system. If the flash drive currently has another file system, it will be formatted, leading to the installation of the desired one.
  3. Check the box next to "Create boot disk" .
  4. Next to it, choose one of the two options, depending on the operating system you ed: "MS-DOS" o "Free DOS" .
  5. Next to the field to select the type of operating system, click the drive icon to indicate where the desired image is located.
  6. Click on the start button" to begin the process of creating a boot device.
  7. After that, almost the same warning will appear as in HP's USB Disk Storage Format Tool. In it, click "Yes" .
  8. Wait for the recording to finish.

You will now have a ready-to-use flash drive from which you can install DOS on your computer and use it. As you can see, this task is quite simple to complete and does not take a long time.
